A fabric name is not a specification. Before placing a material order, a brand needs enough information to predict appearance, performance, cost and compatibility with the factory process.

1. Record the commercial specification

Confirm fibre composition, usable width, weight, finish, unit price, order unit and supplier quality code. Ask whether tax, delivery and packing are included.

Width and consumption affect the real garment cost. A cheaper narrow fabric can cost more per garment than a wider quality with a higher metre price.

2. Test the intended colour

Opacity, crocking and shade variation can change by colour. A black sample does not prove that ivory or blush will provide the same coverage.

Approve colour under appropriate light and record the standard used. Custom dyeing should include a lab-dip or strike-off approval and an agreed tolerance.

  • Daylight appearance
  • Opacity on the body
  • Dry and wet rubbing
  • Lot-to-lot shade
  • Lining requirement

3. Check garment performance

Test shrinkage, seam slippage, snagging, pilling, pressing and the intended care process. If embroidery, printing or pleating is planned, test it on the actual base quality.

Full-length modest garments can behave differently from a small swatch. Drape and hem growth should be checked on a representative sample.

4. Confirm MOQ and replenishment

Ask whether the minimum applies per quality, colour, print or total order, and whether the fabric is stock-supported or made only for one production run.

Record current stock, reservation terms, replacement lead time and the risk that a reorder comes from a different dye lot.
