There is no honest single price for manufacturing an abaya. Two garments that look similar in a campaign photograph can have very different fabric consumption, seam work and embellishment time. A useful estimate starts by separating development costs from the repeatable cost of each production unit.

1. The seven parts of an abaya cost

A factory builds a price from material consumption, making labour, trims, embellishment, finishing, packaging and overhead. Sampling and pattern development sit outside the bulk price because they happen before the production line can repeat the style.

Fabric usually moves the number most. A wide-cut or flared abaya consumes more metres than a straight silhouette. Directional prints, nap fabrics and placement embroidery also create cutting waste.

2. A worked costing example

For a simple closed abaya, imagine 3.2 metres of fabric at $4.50 per metre. Fabric alone is $14.40 before waste. Add $7.00 for cutting and sewing, $1.60 for trims and labels, $1.20 for pressing and packaging, and $2.50 for factory overhead. The working ex-factory estimate is $26.70 per piece before freight, duty and sampling.

This is an illustration, not a Zameett quote. Change the fabric to a premium imported crepe, add lining or hand beadwork, and the same silhouette may move substantially. The example shows why brands should compare the assumptions behind a number.

3. Why embellishment changes the calculation

Machine embroidery is normally priced by stitch count, coverage, number of thread colours, stabiliser and hoop changes. Handwork is priced by verified labour time and material count. A reference image labelled simply ‘beading’ is not costable.

Give the factory a placement drawing with dimensions, artwork scale and a physical or photographed quality reference. Ask for an embellished panel or strike-off before the full garment sample when the artwork is complex.

  • Specify artwork width and height
  • Identify machine, hand or mixed technique
  • List bead, sequin and thread types
  • Mark placement from stable seam points
  • Approve colour and density on the actual fabric

4. MOQ, size range and the hidden cost of variety

A low MOQ spreads pattern, sourcing and setup work across fewer units, so the unit price rises. Too many colours at a small total quantity also fragment fabric buying and line efficiency. Twenty-four pieces in one colour is easier to produce than twenty-four pieces divided across six colours.

For a first drop, use one or two base fabrics across several designs, keep trims shared, and put variety into controlled details. This protects the visual collection without creating a separate sourcing problem for every SKU.

5. What to send for an accurate quote

A factory can only price the information it receives. Send front and back flats, measurement spec, fabric composition and approximate weight, colour count, size ratio, trim list, artwork files, label requirements, total quantity and delivery destination.

Request three numbers: sample cost, ex-factory bulk price and estimated shipping. Confirm whether taxes, duties and final-mile charges are excluded. A lower price with missing assumptions is not a cheaper quote; it is an incomplete one.
