The Garment Sampling Process for Modest Fashion

1. Development prototype

The first prototype tests whether the concept and technical information can become a garment. Development fabric may be used when final material is not yet available, but any difference in weight or stretch must be considered during review.

For an abaya or modest dress, assess length, sleeve movement, opening coverage, opacity and balance as well as the flat measurements.

2. Fit sample

The fit sample is reviewed on the intended body or form against the measurement chart. Record actual measurements before making visual comments so the team can separate a pattern issue from a sewing or fabric issue.

Photograph front, back, side and movement views. Comments should identify the location, requested change and resulting measurement rather than use words such as looser or longer without numbers.

3. Size set and grading

A base-size approval does not prove that the smallest and largest sizes work. A size set tests grading, proportion and construction across the range.

Pay particular attention to sleeve width, armhole, hip ease, garment length and artwork placement because these do not always scale well through a simple mathematical rule.

• Check graded artwork placement
• Confirm labels and size identification

4. Pre-production approval

The pre-production sample should represent the bulk order closely: approved fabric, trims, labels, construction, artwork and packing decisions.

Bulk cutting should begin only after the sample, tech pack, purchase order and open-issue list agree. Keep one sealed or clearly identified approval reference.
